I am installing Hoary on a PC for somebody else but I after several
hours of searching, reading google, compiling kernels I had no success
so far.

I have no sound module loaded. I have tried compiling the
2.6.11-kernel form the sources on Hoary but there seems to be a few
bugs in the code and although I could get the PC to boot and function
somehow, I have seen several kernel-related error messages on the tty
with this kernel - which was not the case with the 2.6.10 kernel from
the installation-CD.
Anyhow, the 2.6.11 kernel did not fix the sound-problem.
Even after loading the following modules using modprobe (how I miss
Debian's modconf!):
snd-intel8x0, snd-pcm-oss, snd-mixer-oss, snd-seq-oss there was no
/dev/dsp or /dev/audio
I have seen some GUI-menu which made an inventory of the hardware (and
it could not get the sound working) apparently to send it in to
Ubuntu, but I can't find it now in the Gnome-menu-system.
Any ideas on how to get the sound working on this system?
Regards
Johann
