Process (from memory):

CTRL-ALT-F2
sudo su -
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
# edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your favourite editor, adding lines noted above
# I used
#   HorizSync 30-70
#   VertRefresh 50.0-75.0
/etc/init.d/gdm start
