when is xfs required?

My woes with Xtightvnc went away after installing xfs and changing the
font path to "unix/:7100". I found an exchange in the list archive
claiming that xfs is obsolete technology. Can anyone explain when xfs is
required? Is it required for running apps remotely? Or only if the X
server (in this case Xtightvnc) requires it?
