Hi,
I do sometimes experience sluggish behaviour of Gnome (in Hoary) - I'm
not sure when it started though but it was more than three weeks ago. It
doesn't happen every day (I shut down my machine for the night), but
maybe once a week or something like that. Now when I have been reading
this thread I think that I should try to diagnose this fenomenon from
now on - with diagnose I don't mean debugging (can't do that :), but to
observe what kind of usage exactly leads to Gnome slowing down.
I remember typically having many programs open during these slow-downs,
but closing all programs and opening a couple of them again haven't
brought the speed back to normal - sometimes I have just rebooted the
machine to get the speed back. I don't think that this has to do with a
slow processor (it's 800MHz) or too little RAM (256Mt), because usually
I can have quite a many programs and files open at the same time without
much loss of performance. So this slowdown doesn't appear to be
consistent - or at least I haven't yet seen a clear pattern, like which
or how many programs need to be open to make the system go slow. Perhaps
it's the amount of work I do with those programs, like how many files I
save or open, or something like that.
One thing that I have noticed is that using Nautilus to work with
directories with hundreds of photos seems sometimes lead to severe
overall slowdown of the system. It's important to notice that this
doesn't happen most of the times, but when it happens I sometimes just
reboot my machine to get the speed back (cuts the work, but fixes the
problem).
As I already mentioned, most of the time Ubuntu and Gnome work for me
with the speed that in my opinion matches well with my hardware. It
would be nice though to have the system not go slow at times.
I'm glad to see that 97% (I'm good at numbers, you see :) of the people
on this list seem to be realistic about their support to Ubuntu. It's
good to see what's good and it's good to see what's not so good (in my
opinion good things dominate heavily :). Seeing the not so good is the
first step to get it better in the future and thus helps everybody.
Regards,
Ari
