KDE vs. Gnome (Questions, not a Troll)

Well icons such as home and computer are in the default Gnome i
thought and Ubuntu turned them off to make the desktop cleaner and
simpler - if you want to turn them back on isnt there an option in
Gconf to do this? im not sure where it is though as im at work so cant
look - anyone?
