my dvd/cdrw combo doesn't recogonize any dvd disks

After you insert a DVD check the output of 'dmesg' from a command line

the last few lines should look something like this:
UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume
'DVDBackup_021220', timestamp 2002/12/20 15:19 (1f10)

If it's not showing up, it's not being automagically mounted.  
Are you using a defaut kernel?

If not make sure you have support for the UDF filesystem.
