CD Rom / Desktop Issues

The CD ROM icon will no longer appears on desktop after inserting CD (or in
the file managers). For both KDE and Gnome, although if you plug in a USB
storage device that icon appears on the desktops.

New to Ubuntu and Linux, I installed the system and everything ran fine. I
tried copying a CD that was slightly warped and the drive started making
terrible noises. It would not unmount or eject so I just turned off the
computer. Since then, the desktop icon no longer appears after inserting
any kind of CD/CDR/DVD for any of the users. A CD will mount and work
normally by command line (sudo); no errors in the dmesg either so I don't
think it's a hardware issue.

Any suggestions, thanks in advance;
Jay Jennings
