Hoary Startup & X Server Failure

The deafening silence to this request for help suggests:

a) The question was badly posed.
b) I've inadvertently breached an unknown protocol.
c) The question is thought to be too dumb to answer.
d) There is no answer and I should abandon Ubuntu.

Any chance of a response this time??
