'could work' should be enough for you. Just try things out until it
works. You're not clobbering your current hoary install, just trying to
duplicate it on another partition. When you're happy you can boot into
both hoary installations, you can proceed and upgrade one to breezy.

Since you did not answer Daniel's questions, nobody is going to be able
to give you an exact answer that's guaranteed to work. If you tell us
how your partitions are structured and how you want the duplicate to
look, a more detailed response can be given.

You shouldn't risk your original partition. To be even more sure of
this, you could do the copy in single user mode with the source
filesystems mounted read-only.
