kernel modules not enabled

I'm using a standard Ubuntu kernel
2.6.10-5-amd64-k8-smp

When I boot up I get a message:
kernel: No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.

What is the significance of this, and does it matter? Things seem to
work normally, but the message sounds pretty disastrous.
