Sound Juicer dies when reading CDs

Hi!

I've got a Compaq Presario 1500T laptop with a TEAC DW-28E DVD/CD-RW drive.

I'm running a default Hoary installation, having added some of the
packages described on http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/RestrictedFormats
for audio and video reproduction

Whenever Sound Juicer tries to read a CD it dies... if I look at
/~/.xsession-errors I found the following error:

libhal.c 990 : Error sending msg: No property storage.cdrom.read_speed
on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_22_0

Without a CD placed on the drive, it opens fine, but as soon as I insert
a CD into it, it tries to read it and dies...

Any other uses of CDROM work fine, I can read data CDs, I can listen to
audio CDs using Beep Media Player, cdplayer or other...

Sound Juicer worked fine on same laptop with Debian Sarge and Fedora Core 3.

any ideas??

thanks in advance,

Juan
