Newbie has lost his basket

After adding the Trash applet to your top panel, right click it, and 
make sure "Lock to panel" is not enabled. Then you can use the 
middle-mouse-button to drag it to another panel.

For the volume-applet: add it that same way as Trash (right click panel, 
  "add applet"). If it does not appear, log out and log into gnome 
again. That worked for me, if I recall correctly. If that works for you, 
too, it would be a good idea to file a bug in bugzilla for this, as the 
applet should of course appear instantly.
