depending on your windows version but I think that internet connetion
sharing is still around, you may want to check up on how to do that,
You basiclly would need an ethernet card in each machine, (less than
$10 each) and if you connect the ethernet card directly to the ubuntu
machine without using a network hub, you will need a special cable
called a crossover cable. Otherwise you would need a hub, and use
standard cables.
then when the ubuntu machine tries to get on the internet the windows
computer upstairs would dial the internet and pass the information
downstairs over the network cable.
Other advantages are that you could share files and printers this way
between the computers.(get the internet connection working first
though)
It has been over 6 years ago that I did dial up so anyone else please
correct me on the "recent" changes.
