I am also a newbie but you do need to provide more information for
anyone to be able to assist you.

Pardon me if I get the terms wrong--

Is it wireless or wired?
Is information about the hardware available?
Have you considered upgrading to Hoarty? I did it via the "change
Warty to "Hoarty" method and it worked!!!!  It is a vast improvement.
Does the system "see" how you trying to connect to the interent?
etc

The folks here are very helpful but they need details in order to
provide assistance.  I have had no problem (much less than xp)
connecting via my dsl modem so with a little fiddling you should be up
and running in no time.

Sorry for no answer but even if you running a mac or windows you would
still need to provide more background.
