no sound with many video files

Install MPlayer (and make sure their are *no* files lift from a previous
installation. Move the old /etc/mplayer and ~/.mplayer directorys to a
another location) and report to us what it outputs (everything up to the
"Staring playback..." message).

(Please do the above even if you don't want to use MPlayer. I'm using
MPlayer here as a debug tool to tell us more about your problem.)
