flash makes firefox _slow_

Which flash do you have installed?  Check your installation in synaptic.
There are "two" versions of flash for Linux.  One is made by Macromedia
(big surprise) and one is an open source attempt to recreate flash
(another big surprise).  

I've had problems with the SWF (open source) version before.  Check to
see if that's the one you have installed.

I've also have many problems when I had the bright ideas of installing
them both.  They both respond to a flash based sight and really cause
havoc with each other.
