/dev/modem -s link keeps disappearing

Hi, 
I would appreciate help in solving a strange problem
in hoary. I use a robotics external modem and
gnome-ppp dialer. When I set up gnome-ppp the only
thing i did, created a symbolic /dev/modem link to
/dev/ttyS0 serial port and the modem worked right
away. The problem is that each time I reboot the
/dev/modem link disappears from the computer
completely, so I have to recreate the link every day
to be able to log on. 
Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
