I'd try two things:
1.  make some new udev rules:  see in /usr/share/doc/udev/, esp
writing_udev_rules .  To this end you can also add specific
instructions under /etc/dev.d
2. fiddle around with the defaults for gnome-volume-manager.  I don't
actually know all that much about this, bu you can access the controls
through gnome-control-center.

If you do figure this out please email back the list and let us know
what you came up with!
