(I understand what you're saying about ubuntu-desktop, because that
problem hit me on another machine a couple of weeks ago.)
On this machine I had no problems with apt-get dist-upgrade, no
packages held. I just looked in Synaptic and tried another update and
a "smart-upgrade" and there were no updates to add. I also looked and
the only ubuntu-* packages I do NOT have are the ubuntu-calendar*
packages and ubuntu-live
So I presume I this is the latest Hoary kernel and all the latest
Hoary packages -- the kernel just doesn't work on this Gateway
computer. I have fixed the kink with the 2.6.8 Warty kernel, so I'm a
bit less nervous about leaving it the way it is, BUT it would not
benefit from any kernel updates unless I pin it somehow.
Oh, and as for the update-notifier not running, on another machine I
discovered that it will run in a brand new user account. There are
some other tricks, but I haven't gone through that on this other
machine yet (and maybe I won't bother). I gather update-notifier is
not fully operable until you get the primary user added to the proper
group, too. (the admin group?)
So if I can get this kernel problem figured out, I'd like to do a
clean install of Hoary to make sure the user account gets set up with
all the new "bells & whistles."
Thank you for your suggestions!
