If you can't get a good reference for a working USB 802.11b or .11g
stick, check out www.yellowdoglinux.com and their list archives as
per:
<http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-ca&q=site:terrasoftsolutions.com+usb+802.11b&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8>.

Also, there's a less than explicit FAQ at
<http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_4.0/usb-802.11b-key.shtml>
that shows success with two USB dongles.

You may have luck at:
<http://www.sharplabs.com:8668/space/snipsnap-search?query=usb+802.11b&submit=Search>
(you may have to wait... the site seems ultra-slow at the moment)

And, of course, you should've started with the Ubuntu wiki at:
<http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCards/view?searchterm=usb%20and%20802.11b>

Eric.
