It depends on the machine. My (current model) 12" iBook G4 has an
Airport Extreme (or whatever they call 802.11g) and it doesn't work
with Linux at all. I've been searching pretty hard since Christmas for
a USB wireless stick that'll work, but haven't found anything yet. I
can't wait until I find something... It's just not fun to chat and
email about Ubuntu from within OS X. :o)
I've asked several places if something like the ndiswrapper software
could be written for these wireless cards, but it sounds like it would
take some black magic to do so. Doh!
I AM thankful for the live PPC discs available now though, so when I
DO have a physical connection, I can use Ubuntu/Kubuntu. :o)

I haven't had to do anything with openfirmware to get Ubuntu installed
in the past, but I'm trying to wipe OS X on my old iMac right now and
so far Hoary isn't behaving for the install. The live discs also get
about halfway through (which means it can read the CD right?!) and
then tell me that the cdrom can't be mounted. Many months ago I had
some PPC install problems that were solved by using much better (and
expensive) media, but I don't have any more blanks to experiment right
now.

Probably the Airport Extreme issue. No drivers. I guess we either need
to bug Apple about it or hope some developer can figure out a
solution. (hint, hint).
