Yes, the menu editing has completely gone in Hoary/Gnome 2.10.
Well, of course you can still do it, if you have time a degree in
computer science, but there is no GUI way to do it anymore.
I agree, although the old system was not exactly perfect, it was
delightfully fast, simple and intuitive.
As I understand it, this has been removed in order to implement a whole
new menu system, a new standard that KDE will also use, so that Gnome
and KDE can get along better so to speak.
However the result is that, right now, there is no way for the "normal"
user to modify his applications menu.
Obviously this is not tolerable, and there are, as far as I know, at
least two projects to create menu editor for human begins. One is being
developed by someone on the Ubuntu forums, and another one is being
developed, I think, by one of the Gnome developers, and you can find it
in the "gnomefiles.org" site. They are still in their very early
development stage, but at the pace it's going, I don't doubt that we
will have a mture/bullet proof/full featured editor in time for Breezy
in October. And obviously, if it's ready before then, you can install it
before Ubuntu is released. I tried to install it last week, but it
required a few "patches" to be applied before you could even attempt to
compile it, and this patch thing is beyond my skills, so I gave up.
Maybe someone could take my hand and show me how to do it ?
