That's a good start. Make sure you're using the right driver for your
graphics card (and not VESA for example).
Make a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, then run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and choose the right driver for your card (avoid using VGA, VESA, and
FBDev drivers).
PLEASE:
Make a copy of that file before doing anything just in case
things didn't go right! (Run "cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~" to copy
that file to your home directory.)
