No Root Password

Use sudo thus:

sudo vi /etc/xorg.conf

then enter your regular password to sun vi as root.

Alternatively, type:

sudo passwd root

then enter your regular password and then the password for root (twice), 
then su into root.

The explanation for this was up on the ubuntu site but they seem to be 
re-organising stuff so can't point you to it.
