You didn't miss it. You've not been asked for root-password indeed. But
that's not strange, that's quite normal for desktop-/workstation-
distributions. The first user you created has sudo-rights. So if their's a
task for which you'll need su-rights, you should login as normal user and
sudo the command you need.

If you need root-login, there is a simple way to set the root-password. As
the user you created has sudo-rights, just type "sudo passwd root" within a
terminal, and enter the passwords ... first the password for the current
user, second and third (?) the desired password for root.
