No Root Password

Hi Folks,
I downloaded the hoary .iso today and did a quick install on an old
Pentium III box I use for testing. Just let me say how impressed I am.
This is a very nice little distribution indeed. I have been using SuSE
for a few years which I like, but it is starting to get a bit "big &
commercial" if you know what I mean. Also, I am not a big KDE fan. I
prefer Gnome or Xfce. So, I was just looking around for alternatives
that concentrate some effort on Gnome and landed here.
Now, my problem! The installation and initial update went very smoothly
it appeared. I followed along without a manual ok. However, I appear to
have skipped too quickly at some point because I have no root password.
I only noticed it when I went to change some monitor settings in
/etc/xorg.conf that did not get detected correctly and realised I could
not do anything and then realised I could not login as root.
I don't remember being asked anywhere to set it up, but on reflection,
being asked to setup a standard user without having set up super user
did seem a bit strange?
Anyway, if there is a simple way to correct this without a re-install, I
would appreciate the advice? I did not muck around with the partitioner
on install so I will probably do a re-install when I have done a few
more tests just to know how to change to reiserfs and my multiple
partitions.
This is a show stopper at the moment because I can only set max. of 60
MHz refresh at 1024x768 and that is killing my eyes. I know the old
monitor can handle 75 and the Matrox G400 has more grunt.
Hope someone can help?
Cheers,
Paul.
