gnome apps starting slowly (if at all)

i'm using fluxbox because my machine hasn't been blessed with the
greatest of resources (celeron 700mhz 128mb ram). however, after
upgrading to hoary (and gnome 2.10), fluxbox starts slower and most of
the gnome apps aren't being very responsive. is this because of a
significant change in gnome that hasn't been accommodated by fluxbox
yet? just curious... i guess i can tar on the command line again (i
was getting spoiled by file-roller).
