This is easy to do. Go to Applications->System Tools and start the
"Configuration Editor". Go to Apps->Nautilus->Preference and uncheck the
key named "Show Desktop".  Then exit the configuration editor.

This will remove all icons from the desktop, and disable the right-click
menu (with the Terminal command in it etc), as well as any action
possibly associated with the desktop (like the "Control + L" shortcut
for example, if you are using Hoary).
