Linux as Desktop OS in Enterprises

Hi all,

I'm planning to write my Master's Dissertation for a Computing Degree
(Master of Computing) on a topic in the area of Linux and Enterprises.
So far, I narrowed the area of research down to Linux as a Workstation
OS in Enterprises, although that can/might still change.

A couple of weeks ago I read an article in the MIS New Zealand about
Munics change from Windows to Linux (SuSE, as far as I remeber) and the
problems they encounter during this process: Most problems are caused by
"mission critical" applications that are in use but that require
Windows. Hence, they have to use VMware, increasing costs and complexity
of the IT infrastructure instead of decreasing those by using Open
Source software.

I feel that most of the research done in the area of Linux is about
Server Systems and I do not want to add some "oppinion" to this endless
discussion. I would rather like to research in a "new" or emerging area
and I think that these days Linux has the ability to be used on
Workstations as well as on Servers in Enterprises (as for example Ubuntu
shows).

I'm still at the very beginning of this dissertation and have not yet
fixed myself to any topic (except that it ought to be in the realm of
Linux). I hope to get some feedback and/or ideas from the community as I
would like to write a "useful" paper. Furthermore, I hope I will be able
to write the dissertation with the "help" of the community in order to
produce a sound paper.

Thanks in advance for any help/feedback/ideas!

regards
.christoph

P.S.: I know that this is not an Ubuntu specific topic, yet.. But it
might become one..?! ;)
