Anti-aliased fonts and hinting

On Warty (latest daily update), I noticed that with hinting enabled (under
the Fonts Desktop Preference), the only fonts that display anti-aliased are
the Free* ones (FreeSans, FreeSerif, FreeMono).

When I disable hinting, other fonts display properly anti-aliased.

Has anyone else noticed this oddity? What would be different about these
fonts that would cause them to display properly with hinting turned on?
