If you right-click and open the volume control, does it work correctly?

Did you log out and log back in after adding yourself to the group?
(addgroup <your username> scanner).

Someone else on a Dell machine reported a similar problem, and it should be
fixed in the most recent kernel:

I also have a similar problem on my ThinkPad, which persists with the new
kernel, but I found a patch which seems to correct the problem:
