What version of VMware? There are rumours of relevant fixes in the 4.5
series.

The current rescue option is to boot from the CD, run through the
installer interface up to the start of the partitioning step (until you
finish partitioning, the installer won't write anything to your hard
disk), press Alt-F2 and enable the second console, mount your installed
system somewhere, and chroot into it.

This will probably be improved in the future.
