It isn't needed. That is different to Debian.
Applications which installs a menu entry Gnome will list and for other 
applications you can create entries with Gnome nautilus.
Goto applications:///
There can be a bug up-to-now which needs a restart of the panel to list 
new top folders in applications menu.
