ndiswrapper is used for these devices because a proper Linux driver is not
available anywhere.  This affects all Linux distributions equally, including
Ubuntu.

The next version of the Ubuntu standard kernel will provide the kernel side
of ndiswrapper, so that if you are familiar with this tool, you can easily
use it.

It's difficult to say what the cause could be without more information.
Check the System Monitor (applications->system tools) and see if there is a
task using excessive CPU resources.
