John takes a refresh

It would be nice, I think, for the daily builds and sounders and such to
identify themselves: I suggest yyyymmdd-hhmm to identify then the CD
image is compiled, and that this fact be recorded in some prominent page
such as sysadmin's home directory.

This would help users report what they installed with instead of the
vague description I'm about to offer, and the Canonical folk to check
off the descriptions against what they thought.

I installed from a daily build of, I think, a little over 48 hours ago.

I took three pages of illegible notes, and what follows is my
translation of those notes created using gedit until I became too
frustrated with it and switched to the much better vim. Where, I asked
myself, is gvim?

Initial Qs.
Could keyboard, language, country and timezone be set at boot prompt
(and hence config file)?
   kbd=
   country= (two-char ISO)
   lang=
TZ= (maybe interpreted in context of country)

Does not detect wireless card. I've been assuming that the PCI info can
be used:

0000:00:0e.0 Class 0200: 10b7:9055 (rev 30)
0000:00:10.0 Class 0280: 1260:3890 (rev 01)

The first is a 3COM NIC, the second my wireless card.

It's true that the wireless card's not usable (at least until someone
figures how to get firmware into it), but listing cards would clarify
the situation regarding the one it shows.

Partitioning
I have previously partitioned this disk and want to use the same layout.
The partitioning tool does nothing to help me in this.
It listed the three partitions, all ext3, and describes them as
Partition 1
Partition 2
Partition 3
or something along those lines, I'm typing this well after the event.
Partition 1 is obviously my /boot.
There is nothing more than guesswork on my part to distinguish between 2
and 3, they're of equal size.

What I think should happen is this:
1. The tool display the table using established Linux conventions.
2. Since these are Linux partitions, display labels (if they exist) and
percentage used (or some other measure).

Since I'm installing over an existing Linux system, it would be nice if
it could look for /etc/fstab for hints about filesystem usage.

When I choose a partition to work on, the default should (if possible)
its previous usage, the default filesystem should be what was there before.

Maybe at some point the installer could add entries to /etc/fstab for
unused partitions so the can easily be mounted in subdirectories of /mnt.

I find the final partitioning confirmation annoying, I think it should
default to Yes, write the stuff (or better, be done away with).

I find altogether too many questions in partitioning, and with default
answers deliberately chosen to be wrong.

Extraneous packages
Woody installed pcmcia stuff, but at least has the good sense to offer
to remove them when it finds they're not needed. On this system, they're
not needed either, but it gets installed and left installed. Neithe are
the laptop packages useful.

1st boot.
I'm glad to see VGA= and ACPI= propogated.

I don't have a functional network: why are network tools such as ntp
starting?

I don't have a functional network: why am I asked about downloading
software?

There were messages when installing gdm that the home directory already
exists.

The top panel
I'm thinking a lot of new users won't realise groupware includes email:
I suggest the description be changed to "Evolution Email."

I've been tearing off menus for years. It saves lots of clicking and
problematic menu navigation. How come I can't do that now?

Network Assistant
1. Needs to be able to help with firmware
2. Does not make it clear that the "network name" is the station
identifier. Actually, it's not really a name, more a poorly-kept password:-)
3. Does not, but should, accept a blank entry. A blank entry has the
same semantics as "any," but one has to know about "any."
4. There is only one wireless device. It should be filled in rather than
offered in a drop-down list.
5. Does not provide any information about the wireless device it's
found. It's possible there are two (or more) and it's not found them
all. If it said, "Prism54 Duette" I'd know it's not some other card such
as an Orinoco.
6. The help button is greyed out.
7. Error. "Network Admin" has quit unexpectedly. That happened when I
entered a bogus network name to see what happened. When I restarted it,
it worked fine with "any."

/lib/firmware still does not exist.

Desirable software
I rather like autofs and mostly install it when the vendor forgot. It
facilitates automatically mounting all sorts of filesystems, even for
commandline users, and unmounting them when they're not in use any more.

Seems to me it's ideal for pluggable USB devices as they tend to become
unmounted when the user has forgotten about them, and with any luck,
before they pull the USB drive out.

Files in odd places
I note there are some files in /root
Hands up those who've not seen them? Maybe not useful to "average
users," bug geeks might like to know. I suggest they be moved to the
admin user's home directory.

/dead.letter still exists.

postfix
Seems broken. Check your logs, /etc/aliases.db doesn't exist. Might to
be good to run newaliases every time postfix is {re,}started.

Documents
In creating this on my freshly-installed Ubuntu system, when I clicked
"save" there was no obvious documents folder. It landed on my desktop
(which I didn't think I selected but maybe I did).

gedit
Why does gedit have an empty tools menu?
How can I insert another file?
How can I open a file in /tmp?
Where in the menus do I find another editor?

Mail
Why is root getting mail?
root at ubuntu /var/log # less /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
You have new mail in /var/mail/root

Screen res.
The video card was previously driving my Sun Screen at 1600x1200. I
believe I've previously run this monitor at 1280x1024.

In Ubuntu it's come up at 1024x768.

Here is the config:
