The README.Debian in the kernel source tarball in package linux-
source-2.6.8.1 has a mistook.

It says:

If you wish to create a kernel image Debian package, e.g.:
 ../linux-image2.6.8.1_2.6.8.1-C1.0_i386.deb
please read /usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.6.8.1/README.gz file and
follow directions.

The directory is actually /usr/share/doc/linux-source-2.6.8.1
