If you're using the fglrx driver, it doesn't support XRandR properly,
nor DGA properly. ATi's drivers are pretty lackluster under
XFree/X.org right now.
You'll have to manually change the resolution in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
by making sure 1280x1024 is the first resolution specified in the
"Modes" line.
