digital camera not working

Greetings,

I have a Sony DSC-S70 (USB digital camera) which does not work when I
plug it in. GTKam and GPhoto2 cannot see it. GPhoto hung when I told it
to detect cameras and the two instances of gphoto that appeared would
not shut down with kill xxxx or even kill -9 xxxx as root. 
(Under Mandrake 10 and Suse 9.1 (the only 2 distro's I've ever seen it
work properly with) I get an icon appear on the desktop which opens the
camera for browsing when clicked on.)
Apologies if I've missed something obvious, I'm learning but have a long
way to go yet.
