We will eventually switch to ALSA completely to fix these bugs.

I have the very same chip and it works perfectly out of the box.
rhythmbox should work well, can you please try that? (Applications ->
Multimedia -> Music player).

I don't think so. As long as /dev/dsp exists on your system, the sound
card has been recognized and should (generally) work.
