[Gnome] Where do minimised apps disappear to?

Having never used Gnome before I thought I'd give it a go
with Ubuntu.

One thing that puzzles me is where the apps disappear to
when I minimise them? I'd expect to see a representation of
them down in the taskbar area that would permit me to bring
them back up, but I can't find them anywhere.
