Hal not running properly

Hi,
I just installed Ubuntu and first impressions are good.
It would however appear that there's some problem with hal. During boot
it appears to start just fine, but if I try to open the removable media
program (I'm using the danish translation, so I don't know the english
title, but it's located in Desktop preferences) I get the following
error:

Volume Management not Supported

The "hald" service is required but not currently running. Enable the
service and rerun this applet, or contact your system administrator.

I don't really know what to about such an error - any help would be
appriciated.
