purpose / target audience for Ubuntu

Hi, this is my first post to this list.

A friend of mine has aquired Ubuntu and wants to learn to
use it (reasons are involved).  Since I'm one of the few
Linux people she knows I've been volunteered to help.

I'd like to try to persuade my university's Unix Support
to mirror Ubuntu, but to do that I'd like to give them a
clear idea of what Ubuntu is intended for (they already
mirror major distros: Debian, Fedora and Suse).  I've
googled, and come up with 'Just Work', can anyone add to
this?
