Not that this helps your situation, but I adopted an older Packard
Bell computer that behaves exactly the same. In fact, it may have been
the final blow to the hard drive of mine that died. I had it plugged
into the machine to see if I could mount it there and when I couldn't,
I shut down the machine (knowing that you should use a drive as little
as possible when it's having problems). When I got up in the morning,
I too noticed the NIC lights on and discovered the disc had been
spinning all night. :-( It was significantly hotter than it should be
too.
I had Ubuntu on that machine for a short period, but I quickly
installed it on my main computer and didn't really touch the old one.
If we have similar bios and motherboards, perhaps I can duplicate some
of the issues you're having. (I'm reading through your older posts
now) If there's anything specific you'd like me to try, let me know. I
didn't experience any problems for the short time I was using it
though.
