Can't stop machine shutdown

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the bios that affects shutdown time.
I've double checked that one too but forgot to mention it before.
It's an older model HP Pavilion: XH136.
Here's some more strange details about the machine's behavior. The
computer doesn't actually shut down like I said before. Today I
noticed that the nic and keyboard lights were still lit. But the
screen was totally black and there was no response to hitting keys or
moving the mouse. The only thing I could do was a cold reboot.
I'll try the hardware diagnostics because that's the best lead I have
so far. If there are any other suggestions in the meantime, please
let me know.
