Recommended maintenance tasks?

-there are no linux viruses out there so you won't essentially need it,
but if you want to make sure your not resending any windows virii (i.e.
in a mail you forward) you can use this one (there is no ubuntu package
yet, so install the dependent packages first from universe in synaptic,
then you can install the debian package with: 
sudo dpkg -i <packagename>):

http://packages.debian.org/testing/x11/aegis-virus-scanner

-there is no spyware for your ubuntu system, thus no need for adaware ;)

-your update philosophy is fine ;) run it regulary (you can also use
synaptic)

-no need for defragmentation on journallig filesystems...if you didnt
explicitly select ext2 format on install you'll be fine as it is.

making backups is always a good idea.... :)
