I have just installed the release version of Ubuntu 4.10 on my Toshiba
Tecra 8100 laptop. The install went very well except for a few little
glitches, which I will describe here.
1) The installed identified my prism54 based PCMCIA wireless card, but
could not find my access point - since the access point was not turned
on. However, I did not seem to be able to get past this step until I
turned on my access point and the scan found it.
2) The xfree86 driver for this laptop is "savage". I need to use the
option "SWCursor" "true" (or "HWCursor" "false" I guess - I dont know
why there are both these options when one with a true/false answer would
suffice). Without the option, I am left with the default X cursor in the
middle of the screen while another cursor follows the mouse. Perhaps all
drivers that support a software cursor should default to that. A
sophisticated user could later tune that if they really wanted to.
3) The default volume for the PCM device in the mixer was 0 and was
muted. The only way I found to change this was to run alsamixer in a
terminal window. I dont think a new user is going to be able to find
this. All the other volume options (one in totem, the other on the top
menubar) seemed to only manipulate the master volume.
Apart from that, everything else seemed to load up fine and looks
really good.
