Hi
Just a short update as promised in my previous post on this subject.
When i started the PC today, i thought it would start up fine but i'm
afraid it didn't. Again it hung at the point where it displays "starting
hotplug filesystem", and know it was because it left the PC for about 30
mins - twice.
Remembering some information i had seen on the mailing list a week or so
ago, i decided to try disconnecting various usb devices before trying to
boot the PC. I usually have 3 usb devices connected to the PC plus 1
other plugged into a hub. I have a usb scanner, hub and ps2-to-usb
adaptor (all usb 1.x) plugged into usb2 ports on the PC and a usb
headset plugged into the hub. I decided to see if any of the usb devices
were causing the PC to hang when booting. After a long session of
unplugging and plugging various usb devices and rebooting in between; i
discovered that the usb hub i have is causing the PC to hang on booting
up. I think i finally have a PC (with ubuntu) that will boot up
successfully every time when i turn it on - even though it stall for
30-35 seconds at the point when it displays "starting hotplug
filesystem". Total boot time is around 90-105 seconds (inc 30 second
wait) on my 950 Mhz Athlon PC.
Hopefully this problem is finally over as i *really* want to be able to
recommend ubuntu to other people.
