crystal audio on a dell optiplex gx1p

After a bit of reading on the alsa website, I found something that works.
Adding the following line to /etc/modules
snd-cs4236 dma1=1 dma2=3 io=0x0534 irq=5
Now alsa doesn't complain about 'no soundcard found' and the sound
volume manager works find.
Shouldn't this be automatic though? How is a regular user supposed to
know how to do this?
