hi everyone,

first of all I would like to say thanks to all the ubuntu developers
for the fantastic job they have done. Ubuntu linux is a dream coming
true. I could write for ages about how good is Ubuntu, so I better
stop now otherwise everybody will be bored. Thanks a lot everybody.

Even though I'm very happy, it is not perfect yet. so I have got few
issues. So I'll be very glad if people on this list could help me.

I have installed Ubuntu on a dual xeon p3 500Mhz with 512mb. it has on
the first scsi card the first hard drive(sda), on a second scsi card
the second hdd(sdb) and the CDROM. I have also an IDE CD-RW, a tape
drive and a scanner HP ScanJet 6300 on a third scsi card. to get
everything to work together is not always easy. To get a bit more info
on my hardware config I have attached the output for "dmesg". I have
installed the daily build of 04/10/2004.

Let start with the problems:

* linux is installed on the first scsi hard drive(sda) and win2k on
the second scsi hard drive(sdb). To install windows i unplugged sda
where I had debian, and did the install. at the time I used LILO so I
plugged sda back in and modified Lilo.conf and everything worked fine.
Unfortunately since I have installed Ubuntu I can't boot my window
partition. I have read the documentation regarding the bug regarding
parted and run the command:
  sfdisk -d /dev/sdb | sfdisk --no-reread -H255 /dev/sdb
but it hasn't solved the problem. I have attached the output of the command.
If unplugged sda and try to only boot windows it doesn't work either. windows
says that a file is missing. I can mount the windows partition fine
with linux.
Any suggestions?

* My second problem is that I can't mount the CDROM. in Drives when I
select CD-ROM1 i get the following mount error:
Unable to mount the selected volume.
mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist
so for some reason I can't access the scsi CDROM.
but I can access the IDE CD-RW. the only problem don't seem to be
able to write onto it. I always get the following error message when I
select file/write to disk in the nautilus CD/DVD creator window.
            Reload rewritable or blank media
Please replace the in-drive media by a rewritable or blank media.
I get it even with a new blank disk. THe CD-RW works as I can burn CD
from win 2k
I have tried to use xcdroast but it doesn't work either.
Any suggestions?

* My third problem is the sound card. When installed Ubuntu I didn't
set it up correctly. Can somebody give me some guidance on how to set
it up.
It sort of worked when I had debian. I could play music with xmms, but
the I could play music from the CD rom and real player could access
it. I had to log in as root to be able to use real player. I'm sure I
must have made a mistake during the sound card config. So some
guidance on how to do it with ubuntu would be very much appreciated. I
seem to have lost the exact model of the sound card. All I can
remember is that it is an ISA integrated sound card. I know it is not
enough to have a full explanation on what I should do to set it up. If
I could get instruction then once I have managed to boot win 2k and
got the exact reference, i'll be able to install it.

* To finish the scanner. I have no idea how to set the HP ScanJet 6300
scanner. I have to admit that I have never tried to do it. Instruction
on how to do it with ubuntu would be great.

Sorry for this very long email but I could get answer to my questions
it would be a great help. I would be able to appreciate my linux
desktop even more.

thanks

Nicolas
