String descriptor read error on startup

As an addendum to this, I unplugged the cradle from where I had
previously had my flash card reader. Now Ubuntu no longer recognizes
the flash card reader either and my printer doesn't work.

Furthermore, when I try to start usbview, nothing is visible. The
program is running, according to gps, but there is no visible screen. I
can kill it with gps, but I can't see it. Any ideas?
